Alternative and complementary therapies are finding their way into our society as an additional choice in health care. Non conventional therapies are being chosen, especially for treatment of chronic illness as a way of remaining healthy and well, and for preventing disease and decline in overall function, both physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Beginning January 26, 2010, we will be offering at our Briarcliff office a special gentle yoga class for patients that have osteopenia, osteoporosis, and chronic back pain conditions. This supervised class will be held every Tuesday from 2:00 – 3:00 PM and will be instructed by physical therapist Lynn Culbertson, DPT who is also a certified yoga instructor.

Fibromyalgia Self-Empowerment Program

With the help of our "Fibromyalgia Self-Empowerment Program," individuals diagnosed with this debilitating syndrome may better understand and manage their own symptoms. Our objective is to empower women and men with information and support in order that they may control the fatigue, pain and depression often associated with fibromyalgia.

One-on-one and group treatment sessions focus on such elements related to wellness as exercise, body mechanics, meditation and relaxation. In addition, during the one-on-one treatment sessions, gentle hands-on techniques such as myofascial release, strain/counterstrain and massage are utilized for pain management.

Designed by a team of physical therapists and rheumatologists, this program is a unique and dynamic approach to treating fibromyalgia. Patients who have completed the course report feeling as if "they are on the right track" to living a healthier lifestyle; many also describe how they have incorporated into their routine various tools to which we have introduced them.

Work Conditioning

Work conditioning is the development of an exercise program that best assists the return to a specific job. Flexibility, strength and endurance components will be taught to the patient.
