Treatment Techniques
Physical Therapy at Briarcliff & Jefferson Valley, P.C. has therapists skilled in a variety of treatment techniques. These techniques are used to reduce pain and improve function. The following are brief descriptions:
Strain/ Counterstrain is a passive positional technique that places the body in a position of greatest comfort, thereby relieving pain by reduction and arrest of inappropriate proprioceptor firing that
maintains the dysfunction.
"NAGS", "SNAGS", "NWMS" or Mobilizations with movement is a manual technique developed by Brian R. Mulligan F.N.Z.S.P. (Hon), Dip MT, to help restore functional movements in joints.
Patients will experience immediate results with increases in range of motion that are lasting between treatment sessions.
Neurodymanics or neural tension is an approach to examining the physical health of the nervous system and is
integrated into the orthopedic assessment of the patient. These tests can then be used to develop both passive and active exercises
specific to the patients needs to improve the physical health of nervous tissue and decrease the pain response.
CranioSacral Therapy utilizes specific techniques to facilitate and restore the balance of the craniosacral system. As a result, there is a reduction in pain, an increase in motion and an increased sense of well being.
Myofascial Release Therapy reduces and eliminates muscle/connective tissue restrictions and pain that have been caused by trauma, inflammation, postural changes or scar tissue.
Muscle Energy Therapy is an active technique requiring voluntary muscle contraction from a controlled position
and in a specific direction against resistance. As a result normal movement patterns are restored.
McKenzie Approach addresses repeated movements of the neck and low back, so that an individualized exercise program, which includes postural awareness and position changes, can be utilized to restore a healthy spine.
McConnell Taping Method utilizes a combination of taping techniques and strengthening exercises in order to decrease pain, restore normal alignment and help the individual to return to their daily activities.
Treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder combines specific techniques and exercises to restore a balanced alignment between the jaw, upper neck and skull.
